Even going to the bathroom was difficult. I could not go out and even panicked when hanging the washing on the line. The REAL trick in battling Anxiety is to redirect your train of thought. They all understand the suffering that Anxiety causes. It calms you because you are breathing back in your old air, instead of sucking in fresh air that will give you too much oxygen. You can also talk to a good friend or family member. The absolute WORST thing you can do is to act as if they are LYING or ACTING to get attention. Learning to say No, encouraging people to treat you differently and setting boundaries can all help you make big changes in your life. I just want to be happy - achieving happiness isnt Timeable. In Chapter 25 we will give some advice that shows your chosen supporter the best way to help you. This is also why you should never use alcohol to get you through an Anxiety provoking situation - you may feel pleased that you managed it, but, in fact, you learnt nothing and you may have started a very bad habit indeed. You dont have to make a precise record of quantities, because this isnt a weight loss, or weight gain, exercise. This can be healed but self-help may not be sufficient, especially for working on experiences which occurred very early in your life, before you had developed language or thought capacity to understand what was haping. Mentally, it releases chemicals in the brain that make us feel happier, and physically it frees up muscle tension. Although the process of releasing emotions can be painful at the time, afterwards people generally feel much better. At first I could only take three or four minutes but I gradually got it up to the full 20 minutes. It is simply an unannounced trigger that sets off one's "fight or flight" defense mechanism, kicks in the adrenaline, and BAM! What Causes Anxiety?
